‘My Breasts Exploded’: Washington Woman Says Her Breast Implants ‘Self-Combusted’ 25 Years After Double Mastectomy

The worst case scenario

It’s not easy to look at the “bright side” of things, especially after discovering a part of your body burst apart. “My breasts exploded,” is what Reddit user from Washington Theredqueentheory titled her post. Of course, her chest area didn’t just up and detonate on her, though it’s easy to see why she felt that way. Twenty-five years ago, Queen Theory says she had both her breasts removed with implants to take their place, and now, those implants have ruptured.

Queen Theory says this concerning discovery happened when she went in for an MRI for “tiny lumps” around her implants. “They don’t look different on the outside,” she wrote, but she could feel them without a doubt. The results from the MRI revealed her implants ruptured, or as she put it, “self-combusted,” causing silicone to “fly freely in her body.”

“The pictures look like little pieces of confetti gleefully thrown about my chest by evil body goblins,” Queen Theory joked but added how she’s dreading the surgery to come. She says she’s anesthesia-resistant, which can make operations a terrifying nightmare to experience. “This sucks, but I’m trying to look on the bright side, it’s still better than having breast cancer,” she concluded, hope in her tone.

While the thought of having surgery to remove floating bits of implant pieces is stressful enough, the majority of commenters were more focused on how Queen Theory says she’s anesthesia-resistant because she’s redheaded. As to why her implants ruptured, it was because she didn’t have them monitored and maintained over the past two and a half decades since her double mastectomy.

Breast Implants Aren’t Made to Last Forever

“As a rule, generally breast implants need to be replaced every 10-20 years. They don’t last forever, and the silicone ones have a higher failure rate,” pointed out a commenter. One person claimed this fact made them change their decision on getting implants for enlargement, though Queen Theory clarifies that’s not why she got hers. “I have one of the many genetic mutations that cause breast cancer,” she explained.

Simply put, this whole situation could have been avoided had OP gone to have her implants monitored more regularly. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until her most recent provider that she was told she needed yearly checkups, not to mention her implants didn’t come with “an expiration date,” as she pointed out.

Queen Theory hopes the upcoming surgery will remove the old implants and silicone pieces and replace them with a new pair. And she’s not wrong: this is all technically better than having cancer, but still is a very rough scenario, nonetheless. That said, one Redditor did their best to make OP smile with the cheesy encouragement, “We wish you all the breast.”
