In his poorly proportioned and wrinkled suit, Rep. Mike Flood (R-Neb.) attempted to gaslight his audience during a town hall meeting with his constituents, only to be drowned out by the crowd’s united chanting.
“Tax the rich,” the crowd chanted, after Rep. Mike Flood failed to answer why he was pushing for an administration that wants to cut medical funding. His wife would benefit from such funding, too. After all, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“You, Mike Flood, have decided to capitulate your job of monitoring the funding of places that do research for breast cancer. I don’t see how you can stomach that you did that, because you are cutting the rug out from under future scientists who might develop new treatments,” said one brave mother, who lost a sister to breast cancer and is worried for her daughter.
Rep. Mike Flood danced around her concerns, arguing that a balanced budget would be the answer. His audience did not like that. “So your proposal is to tax the rich?” Mike said, and the crowd broke into cheering and chanting.
Mike Flood then attempted a ridiculous “gotcha” moment. He brought up President Joe Biden’s tax bill. He argued it wouldn’t be enough to eliminate the USA’s $36 trillion national debt. Jeers and boos were flung at Flood. Clearly, the crowd understood he was trying to sway them away from the most obvious answer.
One commenter on Reddit sarcastically misunderstood Mike’s reasoning, saying “I see. So he believes that Biden’s tax didn’t go far enough, so we should tax the rich even harder than Biden proposed.”
Another commenter chimed in, “Does he expect a single policy to wipe out the entire debt in a year? What a joke. If you added up all the things they always say ‘wouldn’t cover the debt’ you’d get somewhere.”
And another, “These people are so disingenuous. “Taxing the rich more won’t cover the debt completely, so instead, we’re going to take on more debt to cut taxes for the rich instead, and try to make up for it (but not really) by cutting programs that poor people rely on. Absolutely moronic logic.”
It’s unclear what Rep. Mike Flood’s goal was for the town hall meeting. Many of his Republican colleagues were met with a similar backlash, resulting in Republicans avoiding town hall meetings altogether. For example, hilarious missing posters of Miami’s Republican reps were erected. Meanwhile, Governor Tim Walz gets a laugh from his audience, after admitting Tesla’s plummeting stock gives him a mood boost.
