Netflix’s Black Lives Matter collection of TV shows, movies, and documentaries has launched in support of the worldwide protests against racism and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

The streaming platform has announced its Black Lives Matter collection which will include titles like 13th from  A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay, Moonlight from Barry Jenkins, Dee Rees’ Mudbound and High Flying Bird, the new Spike Lee film Da 5 Bloods due for release on the site this Friday, and much more.

This collection comes after Netflix became the first entertainment/media company to publicly express their support for the movement last month. On May 30th, the streaming giant shared on Twitter:

“To be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter. We have a platform, and we have a duty to our Black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up.”

With their Black Lives Matter collection, Netflix is leading the pack in the push to promote and celebrate black filmmakers, black stories, and creators.

Explaining the collection, Netflix shared that it is:

“When we say ‘Black Lives Matter,’ we also mean ‘Black storytelling matters.’”

“When you log onto Netflix today, you will see a carefully curated list of titles that only begin to tell the complex and layered stories about racial injustice and Blackness in America.”

Several other providers, like Criterion Channel, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon are doing their part and standing in solidarity with the movement. The current BLM protests are making history, with millions all over the globe doing whatever they to lend a hand including protesting, donating, or spreading awareness through social media.

It is necessary to bring and nurture diversity into all corners of life including entertainment, and what Netflix, as well as other platforms, are doing is an important first step in the fight. As Netflix said in its statement “highlight the Black experience” – celebrate their highs, stand with them through their hardships, and commit to bringing a change.

Black Lives Matter. Express your support for your Black brothers and sisters. Suggest the names of black creators and stories you’d love to see being given the attention it deserves. Comment below!
