Jenji Kohan, creator of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black is working on a quarantine anthology series for the streaming service.
The show, Social Distance, has been created by Kohan and her team including Hilary Weisman Graham, Diego Velasco, Tara Herrmann, and Blake McCormick. It comes three years after Kohan, an award-winning writer, struck an overall deal with Netflix.
Weisman Graham who worked with Kohan on Orange Is the New Black, Showtime’s Kidding and Fox’s Bones, is the showrunner and writer. Diego Velasco, who is working with Kohan on her upcoming series Teenage Bounty Hunters– about 16-year-old fraternal twin sisters Sterling (Maddie Phillips) and Blair (Anjelica Better Fellini) Wesley who dive into the world of bounty hunting and bail skipping baddies- is directing and will executive produce alongside Kohan, Herrmann, McCormick, and Weisman Graham.
As the production shutdowns brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the group decided to challenge themselves by doing something new.
The upcoming series was written without any of the writer’s meetings during the process and produced virtually to ensure the health and safety of the cast and crew. Everything was done online; Weisman Graham runs production from her living room, Velasco directed talent remotely and the cast acts, filming themselves from their homes.
The producers hope to reflect the reality we currently live in with the “unique, personal, deeply human stories” of this anthology series.
According to Deadline, the producers said: “The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same. Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time. “
Social Distance is a show about living apart, together and finding connection even as we all remain at a distance, and the team delivers these stories in hopes of helping people feel closer to one another in these unprecedented times.
