Fans of Netflix’s Lost in Space are in for a disappointment as the company announced the show will end after season three today.

The news came with the reveal of season three. This should give the show time to wrap up the Robinson’s trip through space nicely. The show’s third season isn’t expected to arrive until next year, according to a press release from Netflix.

Lost in Space season one premiered April 13, 2018, with season two premiering Christmas Eve last year.

Fans of the series may be reassured to hear Lost in Space Executive Producer Zack Estrin say this has always been the plan. “From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy. A three-part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle, and end.”

Lost in Space told through generations

Lost in Space

The Netflix series is hardly the first time viewers have seen the Robinson family make a daring journey through space. Lost in Space was originally a television series that premiered in 1965. The original series also had only three seasons, though there were many more episodes per season than with the Netflix series so far. The 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson and a comic book series first issued in 1962, Space Family Robinson, were the inspiration for the original series.

Since the original series aired, Lost in Space has shown up time and time again in different media. From a 1991 comic book series to a 1998 film, Lost in Space has been reproduced for numerous generations.

The door is being left open for future adventures with the Robinson family. “It’s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode โ€“ if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission โ€“ it’s Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith… and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken,” Estrin says. “So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.”
