HoYoverse has always had a contentious relationship with leakers over their games, leading to quite a bit of drama, but their latest effort to counter leaked information may have negatively impacted smaller streamers. Characters and their kits in both Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail often leak early, allowing players to get an unintended early look into upcoming units in the game. Reportedly, to combat this, HoYoverse has started up a private server for certain content creators, allowing them to release and make preview content over upcoming characters early. The problem? This may be impacting smaller content creators.
Honkai Star Rail HoYoverse Drama
On March 20, Youtuber Mtashed released a video titled “HoYoverse Just Ended My Career and I Have to Quit.” This might sound somewhat hyperbolic, but Mtashed affirms this statement by stating early on in the video that his channel is essentially “dead.” Mtashed revealed that large content creators such as Braxophone gained access to a “creator server” allowing them to test upcoming characters early, in this case, Acheron. Essentially, this boils down to larger content creators creating early content and guides for new characters, while smaller creators like Mtashed cannot create content in a “competitive manner.”
Braxophone released a video responding to Mtashed’s video, stating that he feels some “survivor’s guilt” but admits he did what any content creator would do if they had access. It’s a sticky situation, as Mtashed admitted that this avenue is better for players overall, as players can now get early information from trusted content creators instead of unsourced leaks.
Unfortunately, this HoYoverse drama feels like a situation where there aren’t any villains. Ultimately, HoYoverse’s move to a creator server leads to a better environment for players, while potentially alienating any content creator without access to the server. Regardless, this has caused quite a storm in the community, so we’ll see whether or not HoYoverse decides to open up the server to more creators or if they decide to scrap the idea altogether.
