A family celebrating a five-year-old’s birthday at a New Jersey pizzeria ended up in a heated argument with the restaurant’s owner after asking for a knife to cut their birthday cake. It all started as a normal birthday celebration, which quickly turned into an unnecessary confrontation.

We were celebrating a birthday at Joey Tomatoes in Point Pleasant Beach (my 5 year old nephew) Mind you we bought 4 large pies (different toppings) and 5 large drinks. It cost around $250. We called them ahead of time and ask if it was ok to bring a cake. The person on the phone… pic.twitter.com/Ss4A9w4VxT

According to an X post by user @VintageNJ1, the incident happened at Joey Tomatoes in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. The family said they spent about $250 on four large pizzas and five large drinks for the birthday celebration. They also claimed they had called the restaurant before arriving to ask if they could bring a birthday cake and were told that it was allowed.

After the meal, the family asked the staff for a knife to cut the cake and even offered to pay an extra fee if needed. The request reportedly upset the restaurant’s owner, who compared the situation to someone coming into her home and doing whatever they wanted.

“When I come to your house with my kids… is that appropriate?” she asked. She also denied that the family had called ahead, saying, “You didn’t call. You didn’t make a reservation… It’s inappropriate.”

The man recording the video told the owner that it was only a birthday party for a five-year-old and that the family simply wanted to cut a cake. The owner continued arguing, asking, “How about if I just come to your house with a cake and do whatever I want?”

When a woman said she was “embarrassing” herself, the owner replied that her longtime customers had nothing to be embarrassed about and said, “This is a restaurant… You should be apologizing to us.”

Internet Reacts to New Jersey Pizzeria Owner’s Meltdown

The video has left commenters largely siding with the family, though some pointed out that key details of the story remain unconfirmed. One commenter didn’t hold back, writing, “That owner is unhinged. Holy moly. It’s a cake for a 5 year old and they were told it was ok to bring one.”

Another argued the reaction was avoidable, saying, “Definitely a ridiculous reaction. Even if she did not want to allow the cake, she could’ve handled it much better and professionally instead of yelling in her own restaurant and spoiling other peoples lunch.”

A third suggested the outburst wasn’t a one-off, writing, “That’s an unhappy woman right there. No matter what the situation is she will likely act the same way.”

Someone else pointed the finger elsewhere, saying, “The owner should be directing her ire at the employee who told you all that it was okay to bring the cake if that’s not her policy. If there’s really nothing more to the story, she’s a terrible business owner in how she handled this.”

One commenter took a more skeptical view of the whole story, writing, “Woman clearly said that you didn’t call ahead so one of you is lying.”

The New Jersey pizzeria has not publicly responded to the incident, and it is still unclear whether the family had actually received permission over the phone to bring the cake.
