Cobra Kai might be ending, but the franchise is not. A new Karate Kid movie is in the works and will unite Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio. The two starred in projects from the franchise in different stories and years apart but will work together for the first time. The announcement video can be watched below.
The announcement is also a call to find the Karate Kid for the new movie. The requirements do not require acting experience. Instead, the film is looking for a Chinese or mixed-race Chinese teenager between the age of 15-17 who speaks English fluently. Bonuses include knowing some Mandarin and experience in “martial arts, movement, gymnastics, and/or dance.”
Karate Kid Movie Searching for Its Lead, Who Will Star Alongside Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio
Details are sparse for the new entry. Ralph Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso from the 1984 movie. Meanwhile, the legendary martial arts star, Jackie Chan, was in the 2010 remake as Mr. Han, who will also reprise his role for the next installment.
The next Karate Kid movie will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World). The script will be penned by Rob Lieber (Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween) for Sony Pictures. It will be released in theaters on December 13, 2024.
The franchise has grossed $619 million across five movies. While it started to go down in box office return over the years, Cobra Kai revived the IP. The sequel series on Netflix continues the story of Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka’s Johnny. The new interest could benefit the new movie, which will build a bridge between fans of the original and the 2010 remake.
The casting call details for the new Karate Kid movie are on its website. It is asking for a recent picture and bio when sending information about yourself or someone you know.
