Not long ago, a new Pokemon mobile game was hinted at, one that wasn’t an update to Pokemon Go, but a new game entirely. As it turns out, that new mobile game stars what is undoubtedly the most well-known and well-received pocket monster in the world. The one that instantly comes to everyone’s mind when they think of the franchise, one whose legacy has endured through all the games, movies and manga. I am speaking, naturally, of…

Splash! Magikarp, as the game is called, sees the player in a place called Hop Town, where the residents love Magikarp above all other Pokemon (they must be crazy). As its trainer, your goal is to train your useless fish to become the best splasher. As you progress, random events will pop up, such as Magikarp splashing high enough to snag a berry from a tree, or encounter one in the water that might be a double-edged sword.

Being a mobile game, you’ll obviously spend some time collecting decorations for your “pond” to spruce it up, and no Pokemon game worth its Pokeballs would feature just one of the collectible critters – fan favorites such as Pikachu, Charizard, Piplup, and Rowlet will be there as well to provide, er, emotional support as your scales-and-bones whiskered friend struggles to find some modicum of purpose in its over-glorified-but-still-utterly-sad existence.

Think this game comes as a surprise out of the blue? Think again! None of us knew it at the time, but about a week ago, a Youtube video surfaced on the Pokemon channel warning us of the game’s advent. Now it all becomes clear. Magikarp is angry. It’s sick of constantly being looked down on, and now it’s out to destroy the world, starting with that double-digit IQ’d apocalypse wannabe, Bidoof! Meanwhile, I’ll be waiting for Chop! Haxorus to release.

The Magikarp Song

Splash! Magikarp releases in Japan on May 23 for Android and iOS.
