A man in New York drew backlash online after a video showed his young daughter present as he was being arrested by police on a public street.
According to claims shared alongside the video, the incident took place in Harlem and the man was being arrested because he allegedly had an active warrant. In the footage, several police officers surrounded the man as they attempted to take him into custody. During the encounter, he held his young daughter in front of him while yelling, “What the [expletive] is wrong with you?”
The man’s daughter could be heard crying and screaming as the encounter unfolded. He then shouted at the officers again, saying, “[racial slur], I have my daughter.” The child’s cries made it difficult to hear much of what the officers were saying. As they appeared to try to communicate with him, the man continued yelling while still holding his daughter in front of him.
Toward the end of the video, one of the officers appeared to move closer to continue the arrest. The man repeatedly asked another officer standing in front of him, “What is he doing?.” It is unclear what happened to his daughter after the arrest or whether she was reunited with a family member. Throughout the video, however, she could be heard crying and screaming, indicating that she was visibly distressed by the situation.
Because the video showed the man holding his young daughter during the arrest, many viewers questioned how such situations are typically handled. When officers arrest someone who has an active warrant while a child is present, they generally try to protect the child’s safety. This is carrying out their legal duties. Depending on the circumstances, they may ask the parent to hand the child to a trusted family member or another responsible adult. They may also contact child welfare services if no suitable caregiver is available. The goal is typically to minimize the child’s distress while ensuring the arrest is conducted safely.
Viewers Criticize New York Man Following Arrest
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers criticized the New York man for the way the arrest unfolded in front of his daughter. They argued that the incident was likely traumatic for the child and believed he should have cooperated with officers sooner. “If he was a good father he would be thinking of his daughter who is traumatized. He knows he has an active warrant he’s using her crying for sympathy. All he had to do was comply and not start an argument as to upset her so much,” one person wrote. Another commented, “Imagine being such a trash piece of [expletive] that you have a kid and are still a criminal, yet you can’t even just surrender peacefully and go with the cops. You have to hide behind your daughter like a [expletive] and traumatize her. [Expletive] loser.”
More viewers criticized the man. They argued that he should have focused on protecting his daughter from the situation rather than arguing with officers. “Instead of quietly calling someone (Mamma) to pick up the girl because he has a warrant. He yells and screams at the police regardless of how it might affect his daughter. #Loser,” one person wrote. Another commented, “Stupid, stupid, stupid. I wish that he would have used that time to comfort his daughter instead of yelling at the cops.”
The video sparked a conversation about the impact that witnessing a parent’s arrest can have on a young child. This is in addition to whether more could have been done to shield the girl from the confrontation. It also led to broader discussions about how officers should handle arrests when young children are present. Many emphasized the importance of prioritizing the child’s safety and well-being throughout the encounter.
