New York Woman Refuses to Leave Man’s First-Class Seat Because Hers Won’t Recline: ‘You Gotta Get Out of My Seat’

USC didn’t teach this

Justin Escalona thought he had gotten very lucky. He received a free upgrade to first class and got seat 6A on a 6 a.m. flight from New York to Los Angeles. He planned to sleep through the five-hour flight. But instead, someone woke him up, asked him to give up his seat, and the situation quickly turned into a heated argument in the cabin before the plane even took off.

This first class Karen bothered this guy at 6am on a flight, sat in HIS seat, then refused to move because her seat doesn’t recline… and somehow that’s his fault 😂

The incident happened on American Airlines Flight 171, which flew from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Los Angeles at around 6 a.m. on July 21, 2026, according to Aviation A2Z. The flight was operated using an Airbus A321XLR, one of the airline’s newer planes with flat-bed first-class seats.

Content creator Justin Escalona said he received a free upgrade to seat 6A because of his frequent-flyer status.

According to Escalona, a woman approached him shortly after boarding and asked if he would switch seats. Still half asleep, he thought she simply wanted a different seat. He soon realized the real reason was that her seat would not recline, and the cabin crew had asked him to swap.

Escalona agreed. But when he tried to return to his original seat, the woman had already taken it and refused to move.

“You gotta get out of my seat. This is crazy,” Escalona says in the video.

The argument became more heated. The woman said, “I went to USC, so that makes it even worse.”

Escalona then showed their boarding passes and replied, “My boarding pass says 6A. Yours says 3F.”

The video ends before showing how the dispute was resolved. However, Escalona later confirmed that he got his seat back. After the incident, another passenger told him, “Bro, you almost got robbed, bro.”

Internet Reacts to New York First-Class Seat Feud

The video drew a wave of commentary once it hit X. One commenter quoted the exchange directly: “‘I went to USC so that makes it even worse.’ He obviously learned something there.” Another made a similar point: “The UCLA chant really ties the whole thing together. Peak entitlement indeed.”

A third commenter argued the situation should never have escalated: “A flight attendant would fix this immediately. Wouldn’t have even engaged with her.” Another simply wrote, “Make Asylums Great Again!” A fifth pushed back on Escalona himself: “That would’ve been handled in two seconds, but you decided to post a video about it and drag out the whole situation. Peak genius.”

Not everyone online believes Escalona was completely in the right. Aviation blog One Mile at a Time said he may have agreed to switch seats willingly and later presented himself as the victim, instead of being misled as his Instagram video suggested.

The blog also reported that the woman’s original seat reportedly had a broken recline, which may have been the reason she asked to switch seats. That detail adds another side to the story shared online.

While Escalona ultimately got his seat back, the viral clip continued to divide viewers over whether he had been taken advantage of or whether the confrontation could have been avoided altogether.
