Nintendo has finally released a trailer for the Switch 2, and it confirms all the leaks we’ve been seeing in the past few months and doesn’t leave anything about the design to the imagination.
In typical Nintendo fashion, the Switch 2 trailer has a very subdued vibe and is carried by the masterful audio design. It starts by showing the original Switch, and then it quickly gets a little bigger, losing its glossy texture in favor of a matte finish, and a new kickstand that goes nearly flat. Other than that, you can rest assured, that the Switch 2 will have two USB-C ports and a headphone jack.
Just as the console itself has grown in size, the controllers are significantly larger as well. Not only do they have the same functionality as the previous Joy-Con, but they are also easier to attach and detach because they no longer need to be slid into place. Instead, they simply snap into place a lot like the Lenovo Legion Go.
Then comes the most polarizing part, the color. On one hand, it is stealthy and discreet, but on the other hand, it is lacking the patented Nintendo charm and color. Some might love the new design, while others will find it underwhelming. But there’s one thing we know for sure, Nintendo will sell colorful Joycon in the future which you can buy to make your Switch 2 look as stylish as you want.
The biggest piece of news is the confirmation that the Switch 2 will run all the physical and digital games from the original Switch. This backward compatibility will allow you to keep the library you’ve built since 2017 and add the Switch 2 exclusive games on top.
The trailer does show 2025 very prominently, implying that it will come out this year. More details will become available on a future Nintendo Direct planned for April 2, 2025, after which there will be hands-on events all over the world.
