A trip to a North Carolina Goodwill turned into a heated confrontation after an employee challenged a family over their use of a private restroom. The family says they had already received permission to let a 3-year-old use the bathroom, while the employee apparently disputed their account.
TikTok user Annie.Kroger shared video of the confrontation, which began after her cousin reportedly took her 3-year-old daughter to use a restroom in a private area of the store. According to Annie, the family had received permission from a manager to use it. The Goodwill employee seen in the video disputed that account, telling them, “This is a private area, Ma’am, and nobody’s allowed back here.”
The video begins after the family had already used the restroom, so it does not show whether a manager gave them permission beforehand or what happened before the disagreement escalated.
Annie and her grandmother, whom she calls “Mamaw,” defended her cousin, explaining that the family had been shopping for about an hour and the 3-year-old urgently needed the bathroom. As Mamaw began walking away from the exchange, the employee called after her, saying, “Ma’am, I’m still speaking.”
In the video’s caption, Annie offered more context about the disagreement. She claimed the employee insisted she had witnessed the earlier conversation and that the family had not been given permission. Annie disputed that version, saying she was also present when they were allegedly told they could use the restroom because they had a small child.
Even the 3-year-old jumped into the conversation, saying, “I said I was gonna give them a thousand-star review but now I’m giving one.”
‘Now I’m Giving One’: Viewers Debate Goodwill Bathroom Confrontation
Many viewers sided with Annie’s family and questioned the way the employee handled the confrontation. “Goodwill is shameful for doing this,” one viewer wrote, while others used the incident to air broader complaints about the retailer.
Not everyone believed the employee’s concern was unreasonable. One commenter argued that allowing customers into employee-only areas can create a “legit liability,” particularly when those spaces are also used for storage. Annie acknowledged that concern but said she was “more upset” by how confrontational she felt the employee became with her grandmother.
Another commenter who identified themselves as a retail manager defended the employee’s frustration, writing, “I’m a retail manager, and it’s aggravating when customers ask to use the bathroom.”
Whether the family actually received permission to use the private restroom remains impossible to settle from the video because that conversation happened before Annie started recording. Annie acknowledged that restricting access to an employee area could be a legitimate concern, but maintained that the bigger problem was how the disagreement with her grandmother was handled. The 3-year-old, meanwhile, appeared to have already reached her own verdict: Goodwill had gone from a “thousand-star review” to one.
