A Wisconsin man, just like many people, went to Goodwill so that he could find some deals. However, he was baffled by what he found. Not only did Goodwill upcharge for clothing, but they did so in a way that makes them seem even greedier than usual.
Max (@maxandjess24) shared a TikTok video stating that Goodwill is a “joke.” As a father of five, he uses Goodwill and other thrift shops as a way to access clothing for his children at a reasonable price. However, he said he found alarming evidence that Goodwill is using just one more tactic to “rip people off.”
While shopping, Max noticed that some of the clothing was pretty costly even for being sold at a Goodwill store. He said he felt like he could buy this clothing much cheaper at a yard sale. He was looking through the boy’s swim trunks and found something that completely baffled him. Goodwill listed one pair of swim shorts for $6.99. But then he looks at the bottom of the shorts and sees a sticker there. Max states, “They never took off the price tag from a rummage sale.” The price listed on the shorts before they ever got to Goodwill was $0.50! Now, Goodwill is asking $7 for those same shorts!
Max says, “Come on, Goodwill” with vitriol in his voice as he walks away from the swim trunks. This is a common trend many people have been noticing on social media in regards to Goodwill. Prices have been skyrocketing on items that should only be a few cents to maybe a dollar in price. Unfortunately, with the rising cost of everything, this makes it more difficult for those in need to access common household items.
Commenters shared their anger with Max in the comments to his video. One commenter stated, “Right. Everything was donated… the CEO makes way too much.” To this, another commenter said, “The CEO makes six figures.” Another commenter suggested, “I can go and buy NEW clothes on the bargain racks for much cheaper.” Usually, you’ll find shirts at Walmart, Target, and other stores for as cheap as these used swim shorts.
Commenters continue to flock to Max’s video, sharing their opinions on Goodwill in general and the greed of large companies during these challenging financial times. As one commenter shared, “It’s not just Goodwill. I was at Salvation Army Thrift. The prices were insane. It’s cheaper to buy brand new. At least when you buy brand new you can return if any issues. With thrift, it’s final sale.” The comments on Max’s video continue to show support and offer cheaper clothing suggestions to those in need.
