An Ohio woman came to the rescue when her father was trying to make a product return at his local AutoZone. They told him he couldn’t make the return because he didn’t have an ID. Though this daughter tried to help, their experience was less than satisfactory and didn’t lead to the results they expected.
Yazmin (@y6zm1nnn) warned her TikTok followers that her father and other Hispanic families she knows had a bad experience at their local AutoZone. She said her father bought a car battery and tried to return it to AutoZone two days later, as it wasn’t right for him. He had the battery and receipt, but they told him he also needed his ID. Unfortunately, her father didn’t have an ID and only had his passport.
I never thought I’d have to make a post like this, but I want to warn other Hispanic/Latino families about our experience at the AutoZone at 6031 Groveport Rd, Groveport, OH 43125. My dad bought a battery on August 13. When he tried returning it on August 15, they told him it had already been returned, even though he had the battery and receipt. He went back again and was told he needed ID. When he returned with his passport, they said they specifically needed a driver’s license. I went with him today and offered my license, since we’ve used mine for returns at other AutoZone locations, but they still refused. The store manager, Zeke, even asked me, “How did he get here without a license?” which had nothing to do with returning the battery. We ended up going to a different AutoZone, where they processed the return without any of these issues. We also found out the first location hadn’t even put my dad’s phone number into the system for his rewards. What makes this worse is that my dad has other Hispanic friends who have experienced similar treatment at this same location. After everything that happened, the way my dad was treated felt discriminatory to us, especially since another AutoZone handled the exact same return with no problem. I personally would NOT recommend this location. If you’re Hispanic/Latino, please be aware of our experience before going here. #racism#autozone#fyp#hispanic#columbusohio
Yazmin’s father called her, and she arrived at the store with her ID, thinking she could use it to help him make the return. But since the purchase was under his name, they wouldn’t allow it. Basically, they told him he couldn’t make the return. When Yazmin questioned why his passport wasn’t enough, she felt like the employee (Zeke) gave her an attitude. At one point in the video confrontation, he even asks her, “How did he get here without a license?” He repeatedly questioned why her father didn’t have an ID and said he couldn’t help her.
Yazmin was unhappy with the service that she received and felt like the employee was being “discriminatory” toward them. She said they ended up going and returning the battery at another AutoZone in the area after the argument. They didn’t give the family any problems. Yazmin also called the district manager of that specific AutoZone to explain what happened. However, she told Yazmin there was “nothing discriminatory about the interaction.”
Commenters immediately shared their reactions to Yazmin’s video, with many sharing their opinions about how the store handled the situation. One commenter questioned, “Why did they need an ID if you had a receipt?” Typically, a receipt is all you need to make a return at a retail store like AutoZone. Another commenter stated, “I never needed an ID to return things at AutoZone.” One commenter added that the employee was “acting like the po-po” over the return.
Others commented on how the employee handled matters. One commenter stated, “Every time you asked him, why does that matter? He didn’t know how to answer. Why? Because he knew he was in the wrong and he didn’t have an answer for it. I’m sorry you and your dad had to go through this. I’m happy you contacted higher up, but make sure not to let this go.” Unfortunately, Yazmin didn’t receive the results she expected after speaking with the manager. Hopefully, this is the last time this family has to go through an ordeal like this.
