While customer service is usually supposed to fix problems, a Sunglass Hut employee in Pennsylvania caused more after allegedly breaking a customer’s $300 sunglasses. In a r/mildlyinfuriating story shared by Sheepy06_, the worker was trying to adjust the lenses on a pair of Costa Del Mars that had warped from exposure to outdoor heat. However, in the process, he shattered not one but two pairs of sunglasses, making the customer question whether the employee knew what he was doing.
Sheepy06_ claims that the Sunglass Hut worker adjusted his Ray-Bans first without issue, but ended up breaking the Costas. He went into the back to get a new pair to swap out the OP’s lenses; unfortunately, he broke the new pair’s lenses as well. “I don’t know if he was new, bad at his job, or just completely out of it, but it was honestly painful to watch,” remarked Sheepy06_.
The employee has now told the customer to wait while a new lens order comes in. This uncertainty has left him wondering whether he’ll have to pay for any of the broken lenses or whether the worker will cause more damage to the new ones too. Thousands of Redditors found Sheepy06_’s case quite frustrating, with over a hundred sharing their thoughts in the comments.
Redditors Claim The Actual Cost of The Sunglasses Is Cheap, So the Customer Should Get Back His Pair in No Time
“Seeing how Sunglasses Hut makes probably a 1000-2000% margin on sunglasses, they really don’t care. You’ll get the lenses replaced no issue,” assured a commenter. Hundreds of others agreed with upvotes, with replies saying how outrageous the mark-ups can be. “Yeah crazy that he did it twice in a row tho. He wasn’t really being careful at all,” responded OP.
Since the worker was handling a mall with plenty of other customers’ orders, one Redditor suggested contacting Costa Del Mars directly to see if they can send a replacement so no go-between is involved.
Some commenters were a bit more confrontational in their approach, with one wondering why OP purchased such expensive shades at all. “Sunglasses are one of the biggest scams still accepted as normal – make them fix it, and give you an additional pair or two,” one complained. “It’s absolutely ridiculous that those cost $300,” agreed another.
Unreasonable prices aside, many blamed Sunglass Hut for all this, saying the worker probably wasn’t properly trained to perform delicate lens adjustments. As one person put it, “I wouldn’t necessarily put the blame on the employee for this, but on the employer for being cheap.”
