ToastedShoes started a firestorm of debate after debuting a video featuring a Palworld mod that replaced Pals with Pokemon. Now the YouTuber is back with a new modpack which is both completely different and the exact same thing. The Legally-Distinct Pocket Creatures Mod Pack is about as cheeky as you can get, basically just existing to troll Nintendo and get a bit of a laugh out of the controversy. Featuring such creatures as Vegetative Turtle, Braided Sheep, and Fire Fox, this mod might be the closest you can get to adding a certain creature-catching franchise to Palworld without facing litigation.
Palworld’s New Not-Pokemon Mod
There’s probably not much that Nintendo can do about The Legally-Distinct Pocket Creatures Mod Pack, but it doesn’t need to. It’s not a “serious” mod. Whereas the previous mod drew controversy for adding Ash Ketchum, Pikachu, and other Pokemon to Palworld, this new mod adds Potted Onion and Yellow Rat instead. The point of Yellow Rat isn’t to be Pikachu. The point is to make fun of Pikachu and the very idea of modding legally distinct creatures into Palworld. That’s why instead of the chubby-cheeked electric mouse we all know and love, Yellow Rat is pure nightmare fuel, from its mustard coloration to its unsettling run.
Watching ToastedShoes interact with a googly-eyed flowerpot and other modded creatures in Palworld, it’s obvious that the new mod isn’t like Black Mesa or Defense of the Ancients. It’s not a serious attempt to transform or even improve the base game. It doesn’t have much value beyond a quick laugh, and that’s fine. Mods don’t have to aim for artistic excellence. Sometimes an injection of foolishness is all that a game needs. The Legally-Distinct Pocket Creatures are uglier and less sueable, but they’re still happy to help you battle Saul Goodman, who also got modded into the game, because why not?
Palworld is available for PC in early access.
