A Philadelphia garbage collector is attracting attention online after a viral video appeared to capture a particularly frustrating day on the job. The footage shows the worker becoming increasingly exasperated during a collection route, eventually throwing a trash can into the truck before tossing another bin onto a nearby lawn.
The clip was first shared on TikTok last month under the hashtag #philly and has since made its way to Reddit, where it gained traction after being posted earlier today.
In the footage, a Philadelphia garbage collector appears to become increasingly frustrated while carrying out his route. At one point, he is seen throwing a trash can into the back of the truck before later tossing another empty bin onto a nearby lawn.
The situation appears to worsen when one of the garbage bags misses the truck during collection, leaving litter scattered across the road. The refuse workers can be seen cleaning up the mess shortly afterward before continuing on their route.
As the events unfold, TikToker @richlandel can be heard reacting from behind the camera. “He’s doing a bit much. Oh my gosh! You just saw him just throw the trash can? Hot and bothered. He’s storming around the city.”
Viewers React
The clip quickly sparked reactions online, with many viewers sympathizing with the worker while others focused on the challenges faced by his co-worker.
One Reddit user wrote, “I feel sorry for his co-worker. Having to listen to and watch your co-worker’s temper tantrum, and then clean up his messes?! Nope.”
Others took a more sympathetic view of the garbage collector himself, arguing that the job can be physically demanding and often goes underappreciated.
“I’m surprised you dont see more garbage men going crazy,” one commenter wrote.
Several users also shared their own experiences with waste collection and the difficulties that come with the profession. One Redditor recalled spending time on a garbage truck with a friend who works in the industry.
“My buddy is the only garbage pick up guy for a small district in BC. When I go visit him I usually spend a day on the truck with him. It’s wild to see how some people take it for granted that someone picks up their garbage. He gets the most mad at retirement homes because biological waste is supposed to be discarded in a particular way but they just throw it in the can. Like diapers, needles, bloodied items just sitting there. Yep it’s a humbling experience riding along but I suppose he chose to operate that business.”
On TikTok, one user offered a more sympathetic take, writing, “I’m sure he’s overworked and underpaid!!”
Whether viewers felt sympathy or frustration, the viral clip sparked plenty of discussion. For many, it was a reminder that even the most routine jobs can come with difficult days.
