A group of protesters was arrested Monday afternoon at the Pennsylvania State Capitol after demonstrators blocked hallways while demanding lawmakers pass stricter anti-corruption legislation. The protest was organized by MarchOnHarrisburg, a government reform group pushing for a statewide gift ban that would stop elected officials from accepting expensive gifts from lobbyists and donors. The arrests quickly drew attention online and sparked debate about corruption laws and the right to protest.
Footage of the incident was first uploaded to Instagram by Our Revolution, where it received more than 1,000 likes and nearly 100 comments. The video later spread to Reddit after being shared in the r/Pennsylvania subreddit, where it gained more than 500 upvotes and dozens of comments from users discussing the arrests and the protesters’ demands. Many commenters expressed support for the group and criticized the current rules surrounding gifts to lawmakers in Pennsylvania.
The video shows a group of protesters sitting together inside the Pennsylvania State Capitol while linking their arms. The demonstrators can be heard singing “Which Side Are You On?” as they blocked part of the hallway entrance. Several police officers stood nearby watching for a short time before moving in and removing the protesters one by one. Officers dragged several demonstrators away as the singing continued during the arrests.
According to organizers, nine people were arrested during the protest. MarchOnHarrisburg later released a statement saying those arrested included graduate students, retirees, union workers, and clergy members. The group described the protesters as “democracy warriors” and said some participants were risking arrest for the first time, while others had attended nearly every action organized by the group.
Pennsylvania currently allows lawmakers to accept unlimited gifts, including gifts from lobbyists, as long as anything worth more than $250 is publicly disclosed. Protest organizers argued that disclosure rules are not enough and said the state should adopt a full gift ban similar to laws already used at the federal level and in many other states. Demonstrators claimed the current system allows wealthy donors and lobbyists to have too much influence over elected officials.
Internet Reacts to Pennsylvania Capitol Arrests
The protest quickly sparked strong reactions online. Many internet users said they were shocked that protesters could be arrested over a demonstration focused on anti-corruption laws. Others praised the group for speaking out against what they see as political favoritism and corporate influence in government.
“A congressional anti-corruption support protest gets detained along with a collared priest. Our country has changed,” one user wrote. Others agreed with the protesters’ demands and argued Pennsylvania needs stricter rules regarding lobbying and gifts to lawmakers. “The PA legislature is definitely NOT on the people’s side,” another user commented.
The arrests have added more attention to ongoing debates over ethics reform in Pennsylvania. Organizers say they plan to continue pushing lawmakers to pass stricter anti-corruption measures.
