A Pennsylvania voter took to TikTok to share the she was nearly deceived by a poll worker, which could have cost her the ability to vote.
Posted by TikTok user Evettekawolo, Evette posted commentary on her experience at a polling place in Philadelphia. She alleges a poll worker “deterred” her at the door, insisting she was in the wrong place.
In her video, Evette states, “She said that this is a restaurant and the voting place is down the street.” Evette calls her bluff, knowing for certain that wasn’t the case and calling her attempt to divert her from the voting booth as “illegal.”
Even more disturbing, Evette also alleges the poll worker had a nasty remark to say about the color of her skin, claiming the person said, “You don’t see a lot of that color here.”
Evette is seen briefly confronting several staff at the polling place, calling them out for their behavior. In the comment section, she announced she did get to vote. When someone asked where, she stated, “At the same place sis….It was the place we were registered to vote…so we were not leaving till my baby voted.” So she was exactly where she was supposed to be after all!
Viewers respond in disgust, urging Evette to take action
From the response on Evette’s TikTok video, commenters were just as disturbed as she was, as well as concerned that someone would try to divert voters from the polls, especially one as important as the midterms.
One viewer, TikTok user KarlynDaCaterer, brought up a good point about the cynicism some people have for voting. “If our votes don’t matter, why are they trying so hard to prevent us from doing so?! Good job your lady.”
Another commenter urged Evette to report the polling place. “Call the board of elections!!!!!!!!!!!”
And she certainly did. Evette left an update in the comments, stating she reported the incident to a judge, including “numbers shared in the comments” to file a report.
Others chose to take this as an opportunity to also point out the good the community was doing. “I’m loving all this community support how everyone is willing to help and be a resource for people in real time you guys are amazing!!!”
In the end, Evette did get to vote but she was also right: It is not legal, whether the claims are true or not, to try and deceive a voter.
