A Christian family in Manteca, California, decided to offer prayers instead of Halloween candy, but one teenager’s reaction to their front-door sign has continued to get attention online. Rather than walking away with his friends, the boy stayed for prayer and encouraged the others to join him.

The family shared a TikTok video that began with a sign they had placed on their front door. “Jesus loves you, no candy, but we have prayer. Ring the doorbell,” it read.

The video then showed footage from the family’s doorbell camera, capturing a group of teenagers stopping outside the house while trick-or-treating. They were all dressed in Halloween costumes when they noticed the sign. One of the teens stopped and suggested taking off their masks before taking off his own.

His friends initially appeared reluctant to stay, with one saying he didn’t want to and that it was “time for candy.” However, they remained with him as he rang the doorbell. A woman from the family answered and asked whether they wanted prayer. While some of the teenagers laughed, the boy told her that he did. She replied that she would be right there.

The teenager then encouraged his friends to join him. When the woman came outside, the entire group returned and gathered around her. She held their hands and began praying for their protection and asking that they be watched over. The teenagers thanked her before leaving.

According to Guiame, which reported on the video on November 3, the encounter happened in Manteca, California, and involved about five teenagers.

Along with the video, the woman explained that her Christian beliefs were why she chose not to participate in Halloween. She said she wanted to show kindness to her neighbors while staying true to her faith. “We can still be kind to our neighbors and the community while choosing not to participate in practices that celebrate fear death or witchcraft,” she wrote, adding a Bible verse.

Viewers Left in Awe Over California Family’s Gesture

The video has also continued to spread across social media beyond TikTok. On X, users shared the encounter and praised the teenager for staying even when his friends initially wanted to leave. The renewed attention brought more people into the conversation about the family’s unusual Halloween offering.

Many viewers online found the California family’s gesture heartwarming, with some believing the teenagers genuinely needed the woman’s prayers. “Awww this is so so beautiful God Bless you always beautiful lady,” one person wrote. Another commented, “That boy is a leader. And he needed that. He didn’t care that his friends laughed at him and didn’t want to stay. He wanted to stay. And he stood his ground and waited patiently.”

Others continued praising the teenager for staying and encouraging his friends to join him. “The way he wasn’t embarrassed in front of his friends… the way he stayed… the way he got his friends to stay… I hope this gentleman is doing great,” one person wrote. Another commented, “They don’t know what you probably saved them from.”

The family didn’t hand out any Halloween candy that night, but the teenagers still left with something they hadn’t expected. What started with one boy stopping to ask for prayer ended with his friends joining him. And judging by the attention the video is still getting, that unexpected Halloween visit has stuck with plenty of people who weren’t even there.
