A recent sales report from Nintendo confirms that Pikmin 4 has become the best-selling game in the series just a handful of months after initially launching for the Switch. The sales for the game have been impressive by the standards of the somewhat niche series and has been particularly popular in Japan.
A new Pikmin title has become an expected thing with each new generation of Nintendo consoles ever since the Gamecube. Fans were certainly anticipating Pikmin 4 for some time and were excited to finally be getting the game six years after the initial launch of the Switch, but it’s unlikely that many were expecting the massive success that the game has seen.
Pikmin Sales
A recent financial report from Nintendo published on November 7th confirms that Pikmin 4 has sold more than 2.6 million copies since its release in late July. The next highest-selling title in the series would be Pikmin 3 which has sold around 2.5 million copies to date. That means Pikmin 4 has bounded ahead to become the best-selling title in the series in an astonishing amount of time considering Pikmin 3 launched for the Wii U almost exactly a decade before the release of Pikmin 4.
Pikmin 4 was met with critical acclaim upon its release. The Nerd Stash’s Pikmin 4 review notes that the unique title has “near-perfect gameplay, amazing visuals, and music,” along with “the usual Pikmin charm.” Every entry in the franchise has received similarly high praise despite the fact that it has simultaneously always been a fairly niche series for Nintendo, with the third game being the first to break more than a million sales and Pikmin 4 on track to be the first to break three million. Contrast that with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which the same financial report says sold more than 3 million copies in this quarter alone, and Pikmin 4‘s rise to success can be seen as a small but nevertheless noteworthy one.
