If you own several AAA titles for your PlayStation 4, you’ve probably encountered this message: “There is not enough free space in system storage.” It can be infuriating to have to juggle those giant games around to try to find space for that shiny new one you picked up. Fear not! The upcoming PS4 software update 4.50 will finally bring in support for external hard drives on Sony’s system.

Sony
Go ahead, just leave it installed now.

The features included in the new update are detailed on the official PS4 blog and, while there are some pretty nifty things included, this feature is one that fans have long been clamoring for. There is no release date for this new update yet, but it is live on the PS4 beta program right now. Therefore, it seems likely it will be pushed out within the next few months. Once the update is installed, you will be able to plug any USB 3.0 external HDD into the system, sit back, and the console will suddenly have that much more disk space.

In addition to HDD support, the new software update will also include some other requested features, including:

  • The ability to turn screenshots into custom wallpapers
  • Updates to the quick menu
  • A simplified notifications list
  • The ability to post to PlayStation Network activity feeds
  • The ability to watch 3D Blu-ray DVDs on PlayStation VR

All nice features, but the external HDD support is obviously the big one.

Hopefully, the update comes soon – you will never have to worry about disk space again. So, go ahead and pick up that digital copy of The Last Guardian. The shell game of uninstalling to make space is coming to an end.

Excited for the new PlayStation 4 software update? Did they miss any key features you wanted to see added? Let us know in the comments below.
