Speculation about Sony’s next-generation VR device, presumably called PlayStation VR 2, has been rife since the company confirmed it was working on the headset last year. Aside from the initial confirmation, very little has been divulged about PlayStation VR 2 or its potential release date. It may come as some surprise then to learn that PlayStation VR 2 is rumored to be entering mass production soon.
The source of the rumor comes from a Chinese supplier called Goertek (Link in Mandarin Chinese). Goertek manufactured the original PlayStation VR headset, currently manufactures the Oculus Quest 2, and an insider has confirmed that the company will be producing the next generation Oculus Quest headset. In the same report, the company is also said to be supplying a “major Japanese customer” with “a new generation of VR in 2022” for “its game console”. Naturally, Sony is the only Japanese console manufacturer that fits the bill to be developing its next generation of VR headset for its console. As it’s the only Japanese console manufacturer that has had a first-generation VR headset for its console.
Sony confirmed that it was working on the next generation of VR for the PlayStation 5 back in February 2021. Details on the PlayStation VR 2 headset were light in the initial confirmation. Except to say that the PlayStation VR 2 on PS5 would be “the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.”
If PlayStation VR 2 is indeed entering mass production imminently, then the release date and full announcement for the device could be much earlier than anticipated. Keep an eye out for official PlayStation VR 2 news coming from Sony in the coming weeks and months. Perhaps an announcement at CES, which is this week, could even be on the cards.
