Rep. Summer Lee of Pennsylvania posted on X a video from an event in Washington, D.C. in which she stated that Black lives and Black futures are constantly under attack by white supremacy and that the government has enabled systemic disenfranchisement. The clip, which referenced the inability to fully celebrate freedom without confronting those systems, quickly drew attention online. Commenters pushed back strongly, with many accusing her of race-baiting and ignoring other factors in community challenges.
The video shows Pennsylvania Rep. Summer Lee speaking at a podium during an outdoor event, with other individuals standing behind her. In the clip, she states that over 400 years “this country has stolen black labor, black lives, and black futures” and that “at every stage, our government has sanctioned it from slavery to Jim Crow to redlining to mass incarceration to environmental racism and to economic disenfranchisement.”
She notes that “we are still living through those effects today,” with ongoing attacks on voting rights, representation, Black health, and Black wealth that “are not only a ghost from a long ago past but they are very present in ongoing legacy.” She observes that “we see how easily centuries of progress and struggle are undone with a stroke of a pen.”
She references the president, saying that diversity, equity, and inclusion “shouldn’t be instituted” in institutions, that “the courts are diminishing black political power,” and that “black women face insurmountable levels of unemployment and on safety in childbirth.”
She states that “black lives and black futures are and always have been obstructed by white supremacy.” As a descendant of enslaved ancestors, she says she is “deeply humbled to be the lead sponsor of the Reparation Now resolution” and that “Black folks are owed more than thoughts or prayers or see you laters.” The video does not show what happened before or after this segment.

Some commenters criticized the rhetoric, with one writing, “Weak politicians always pull the race card. It’s their crutch word. Weak *expletive*, *expletive*” and another asking, “Can you actually make an entire career out of being a professional victim?”
Others questioned the focus, stating, “Still won’t say American Descendants of Slavery and Black men. You’re intentionally being disingenuous. You’re not a serious person, Summer Lee.”
Several highlighted different factors, noting, “Most Black people that I talk to say, there isn’t a white supremacy problem that there is a lack of fathers in the black community, which is what’s causing a lot of the problems,” “who is shooting your young black males? Other black males is the only correct answer,” and “There’s no ‘black’ lives. (There’s only individual people who will go as far as they choose to.)
It remains unclear whether the post will influence any policy discussions. The video and statement continue to circulate as users engage with the perspectives shared in the comments.
