An unusual incident in Florida left internet users shocked after a couple was filmed sitting in a river while feeding an alligator at close range. The video quickly went viral, with many viewers calling the behavior reckless and dangerous.
The man and woman were seen sitting next to each other in a river while waiting for an alligator to approach. The woman was holding several pork chops in her hands, while the man held a single piece and repeatedly encouraged the alligator to come closer.
Once the alligator reached the couple, the man waved the pork chop in front of it. As the alligator opened its mouth, he fed it by hand at close range. Afterward, he reached out and petted the underside of the alligator’s mouth, despite the obvious risks involved.
Thankfully, the alligator swam away instead of harming the couple. Despite that, the man threw another pork chop toward it. He then picked up another piece and waved it in the air in an apparent attempt to lure the alligator back. The video ended with the man splashing the water with his hand to get the alligator’s attention. It is not clear what happened after the recording ended or whether the alligator returned.
Viewers React in Shock to Video of Florida Couple Feeding Alligator
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers were shocked by the Florida couple’s behavior and described it as reckless. “How are people SO stupid? I hunt gators and know exactly what they’re capable of,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “What the…? What do those people think they’re feeding, a puppy? Do the teeth not give them some kind of clue regarding what they’re dealing with? Brings new meaning to survival of the fittest. Bet they hand feed bears at Yosemite, too.”
Some viewers, however, defended the couple and argued that they appeared comfortable around the alligator. “What [expletive] do you care? They seem to be in total control of the situation and appear to be familiar with the animal. Wild animals can become tame with regular feedings. They learn it’s in their best interest to momentarily suppress the natural instinct to kill for an easy meal,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “Not everyone is afraid of animals. Your fear is why they attack you.”
The video sparked a conversation about the dangers of interacting with wild predators such as alligators and why wildlife experts generally discourage feeding them. It also led to discussions about how videos showing risky behavior can encourage others to imitate it, potentially putting both people and animals at risk.
