Karen Huger will be an inmate for at least 365 days. The Real Housewives of Potomac star just got the ultimate punishment for driving under the influence. She was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday in Maryland. The sentence came with one year suspended, meaning she will only serve a maximum of one year behind bars. Huger has been ordered to pay $2,900 in fines by the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Following her release, she will be prohibited from driving for a year. Additionally, she is also set to serve five years of supervised probation. During this period, she must have an interlock device in her vehicle once she can drive again. If she maintains compliance without any violations, her probation will transition to unsupervised status after three years. Huger will report to prison today to begin serving her sentence, per TMZ.
Karen Huger Claims She Was in an Emotional State During the Crash
Huger was convicted by a jury last year on seven out of eight charges leveled against her. They included DUI, negligent driving, speeding, and failing to update addresses with authorities. The star narrowly escaped sentencing on a reckless driving charge. She was driving her 2017 Maserati in Potomac in March 2024 when she hit a median and crosswalk sign. The contact resulted in her colliding with a parking sign and stopping off the roadway.
In the police cam footage from the incident, the star answered a few questions. Huger shared that during the crash, she was in an emotional state after having dinner with a friend. They had been discussing her “beloved” deceased mother, which left her in tears while driving home. In that distressed moment, she veered off the road to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
Huger’s cup has overflown its limit, and internet users barely show sympathy following the sentencing. “Dat wig gonna have to stay home,” one X user commented while reacting to the breaking news of her sentencing. A second commenter applauded the judge’s decision, adding a “very nice” phrase for emphasis. The third reaction was not far off from the previous comments, as the poster wrote, “Not long enough.”
Karen Huger Reportedly Entered a Rehab for Treatment in January
We previously reported that Huger decided to go in for intervention after the jury found her guilty last December. To make matters worse, the footage of her arrest showed her in a very deplorable state. Despite that, fans were reportedly eager to hear from the horse’s mouth on the RHOP reunion. As always, the reunion special was one of the highlights of the Bravo franchise. Huger did not grant the popular wish as word got out that she skipped that January 9 taping day.
However, it was for the right reasons as her rep confirmed she went in for treatment. Though the decision coincided with the filming, the move was for the best. Her rep clarified that it was solely her decision to “enter a private recovery program.” They added that she was “fully supported in this choice” by her loved ones. The representative also confirmed that people look forward to seeing her on the other side of this “meaningful journey.”
