The Smurfs are back, and Smurf Village is going to be a real who’s-who of Hollywood A-Listers. The new Smurfs animated movie, set to release early next year, has announced its cast which is going to include Rihanna, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, James Corden, and many more. For her part, the We Found Love singer will be appearing as Smurfette and bringing a collection of original songs to the movie’s soundtrack. Chris Miller (Puss in Boots) will direct the reboot, which follows in the footsteps of Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017).
Rihanna Will Be Smurfette in ‘Smurfs’ Alongside James Corden, Kurt Russell, & More
A new musical comedy from Nickelodeon and Paramount, Smurfs will reportedly aim to answer the ageless question of “What is a Smurf?” It’ll be the Smurfs second fully-animated movie in the last decade, ever since the franchise moved away from live-action hybrids with 2017’s Smurfs: The Lost Village. The 2017 version had its own star-spangled cast, with Joe Manganiello, Julia Roberts, and Ariel Winter. Demi Lovato last starred as Smurfette, but now it’s Rihanna’s chance to shine bright like a diamond as she lends her voice to Smurfette’s musical career.
Along with Rihanna, Smurfs will star other big names like Kurt Russell (F9: The Fast Saga), Nick Offerman (The Last of Us), Daniel Levy (Schitt’s Creek), James Corden (Cats), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black), Billie Lourd (Star Wars Episode IX) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) among others. Chris Miller, known for his work on other animated musicals like Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots, and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted will direct the new musical.
Rihanna will also reportedly double as a producer alongside Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith. The plot of the new Smurfs musical is being kept under lock and key at the moment, as are any details on what new songs Rihanna is going to be bringing to the table. More information on the movie’s plot and the specific roles of its cast members will likely be released as the movie gets further into production.
The new Smurfs movie, starring Rihanna as Smurfette, is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14th, 2025.
