Grab your keys and your recipe book and hit the road! Interactive visual novel Road to Guangdong launches today on consoles. In Road to Guangdong, you play as a recent college student who has inherited their family restaurant. Now you must travel around Guangdong, China in your car and collect recipes from your family members.
The game is written by Yen Ooi, who is the author of Sun: Queens of Earth and a lecturer at Westminster University. Given that the game is a visual novel, combining the narrative abilities of an author with the medium of video games feels like the perfect combination. Akin to Telltale Games, the game will feature moral choices from selecting certain dialogue options. While it is not clear what effect this will have on the game, it supposedly will shape the overall outcome of your character.
When it comes to video games set in China, most fall under historical games like Total War: Three Kingdoms or a level in multiplayer games like Overwatch. Road to Guangdong is a more modern take on the setting, and hopefully takes the people and modern context into account with its story. Outside of the narrative moments, you will drive around Guangdong and explore the environment. Though there are some systems to manage, as you will have to take care of car tires and how much fuel you have. You can visit the scrap pile to upgrade your car to perform better on the road and have more health.
