Thankfully for the fans, the Merc With a Mouth is also the Merc With a Social Media Account. This morning, Ryan Reynolds posted the first official images of current Marvel Cinematic Universe villain Josh Brolin (Thanos in Guardians, Avengers) as future Deadpool Cinematic Universe hero Cable.

Reynolds, who produced and starred in Deadpool, has not been shy about letting fans know the sequel would feature Cable, the time-travelling grimdark son of Cyclops known for his robot arm and enormous firearms. The teaser that played before Logan featured graffiti that read “Nathan Summers coming soon,” a nod to Cable’s real name in the comics. This, however, was the first chance fans have gotten to see the official costume.
The official Cable costume is shown with a soiled teddy bear, lots of ammo clips, some grenade rounds, an enormous machine gun, and a take on his signature metallic arm. In the comics, the arm was initially the result of a Techno-Organic virus which granted a certain amount of regeneration, strength, and durability, but the first look image makes it look more like a more human-scale cybernetic appendage. Either way, looks good.
A similar announcement was made a week ago on the star’s Twitter page, unveiling the costume of the mutant assassin Domino played by Zazie Beetz. Her character’s reveal had slightly more of the signature Deadpool goofiness as she is seen lounging on top of Deadpool himself in front of a fireplace, alluding to some of the first movie’s earliest teaser images.

Cable and Deadpool have a fairly antics-filled past as the two co-starred in a 50-issue series called “Cable & Deadpool” where they became unwilling partners after an odd, religiously-inspired chemical attack caused the duo to merge DNA, thereby causing both to appear when activating Cable’s teleportation technology. It remains to be seen what role Brolin’s Cable will have in Deadpool 2, but it’s sure to include Deadpool being a flippant, foul-mouthed, fourth-wall breaking pain in the ass while Cable is a stoic avenger of reality itself against grave threats that would bring about whichever dark future he’s come back to save us from.
Deadpool 2 is scheduled for release in June of 2018.
