It’s been over 12 years since we’ve new Samurai Jack, but for Jack, it’s been even longer. The fifth season takes place 15 years after the original events of the show and he has not aged, literally.

“Time has lost it’s affect on me, yet the suffering continues.”

Even after all this time, Samurai Jack is still haunted by Aku’s stranglehold on the past, present, and future, with as the trailer diplayed the Samurai’s struggle with failing to stop him. The scenes showed that this season will be even grittier than before, as Adult Swim doesn’t seem to be pulling any punches in regards to the portrayal of violence.

The little bit that was revealed exhibited the return of the beautifully animated choreography, as well as the lush landscapes and how the creators use them exquisitely to create artist contrasts. Notable anime voice actors and actresses can be heard throughout as well, with Phil Lamarr front and center, returning as Samurai Jack.

Lamar will be joined this season – whether in guest roles or as recurring characters has yet to know – by Grey Griffin, voice actress most famously known for the voice of Azula in the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. Before Griffin was the psychotic fire nation princess, she guest starred as multiple characters on the previous seasons of the show and will return for Season 5 as a Mysterious Masked Woman who serves Aku.

Unfortunately legendary voice actor and voice of Aku, Mako Iwamatsu will not be returning due to his passing in 2006. While they have found a replace that does a pretty good imitation, executive producer Genndy Tartakovsky stated: “I’ll be upfront about it—nobody can replace Mako.”

But not all the news is sad, as the producer confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 that John Dimaggio will reprise his role as fan favorite Scotsman. From what the trailer revealed, fans of the show and newcomers alike are in for a wild ride, from mowing down enemies with a minigun or slicing through enemies with his trusty sword.

The end of the trailer remarked that while Samurai Jack is set to return, it will be a limited series and will air Saturday, March 11th at 11 pm on Adult Swim. While more episodes may depend on the reception of the upcoming season, keep in mind that there has been a rumor for a Samurai Jack Film (possibly live action) since the show’s original run.
