How to Get a Chest of Rage in Sea of Thieves

That whistling isn’t the tea kettle.

If treasure were easy to get, it wouldn’t be valuable. Nowhere does Rare‘s colorful pirate adventure embrace this idea as purely as it does with the Chest of Rage. This baneful booty delivers wealth and pain in equal measure, at least if you’re not careful. Though you can sell a Chest of Rage for 3,000-3,500 coins, there’s easier said than done since this Chest has a habit of exploding. Let it overheat too much, and a shrill steam whistle is the last thing you’ll hear before it engulfs you and your ship in fire. Here’s how to get a Chest of Rage in Sea of Thieves.

There are several places you can find a Chest of Rage in Sea of Thieves, but only some spawns are guaranteed. Others grant only the possibility of the chest appearing. The vault within Molten Sands Fortress Skeleton Fort has a guaranteed Chest of Rage. Defeating an Ashen Lord or completing time-limited Crews of Rage Mercenary Voyages also guarantees a drop. Here are some other (less certain) ways you can get a Chest of Rage:

  • Defeat a Megaladon or Kraken Tentacle
  • Dig up X-marked locations during quests and voyages
  • Find on skeleton ships and island beaches
  • Find inside Shipwrecks
  • Find floating with Barrels of Plenty

Once you have found a Chest of Rage, you can sell it to The Gold Hoarders at their Outpost tents or to The Servants of Flame in The Reaper’s Hideout. Selling one will net you several thousand coins, which is fortunate considering how much trouble they cause.

Transporting the Chest

Transporting the chest somewhere you can sell it is another matter. A Chest of Rage will grow hotter over time and eventually explode. To prevent this, you need to regularly douse it in water. If you’re on a beach when it begins to overheat, you can also dunk it in the sea to cool it off. Leave a Chest of Rage unattended at the wrong time in Sea of Thieves and you’ll be wishing you’d sailed into the Red Sea instead. In an emergency, you can also use a Chest of Rage in battle by striking it with your sword to heat it faster. Just mind the blast radius or you’ll be singing your next sea shanty in the afterlife.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
