South Park: The Fractured But Whole has some big shoes to fill. 2014’s The Stick of Truth sold like gangbusters and received some serious critical acclaim; its sequel has a lot to live up to. Perhaps feeling the pressure, the game has been delayed by developer Ubisoft. It was originally scheduled to release on December 6th but has been pushed back to a “Quarter 1 2017” release. Here is the full statement from Ubisoft’s blog:

“South Park: The Fractured But Whole will now launch on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC, calendar Q1 2017. The development team wants to make sure the game experience meets the high expectations of fans and the additional time will help them achieve this goal.”

The RPG received its original release date at E3, along with some gameplay trailers and some gameplay footage. Ubisoft later released information for a hilarious peripheral dubbed the “Nosulus Rift,” which players wore on their faces to bring the in-game farts directly to them. Unfortunately, the Nosulus Rift will not see commercial release. You’ll have to supply your own farts when you play.

Whereas The Stick of Truth played on traditional fantasy tropes and borrowed heavy inspiration from the classic episode “The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers,” South Park: The Fractured But Whole riffs on the superhero genre. It draws heavy inspiration from the superhero episodes of South Park that include “The Coon,” “Mysterion Rises,” and “Coon vs. Coon & Friends.” Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators and principle voice actors of the show, are again heavily involved. The have stated on multiple occasions that the goal is to make the games essentially playable seasons of South Park. Check out some gameplay footage of South Park: The Fractured But Whole below:
