The key to good horror is the atmosphere. You need the right lighting, the right sounds, and movements, and the danger has to be paced correctly in between rests. Games have an advantage over movies here, because they can get away with things the big/small screen can’t, thanks to the fact that the player can, you know, die. Silent Hill’s first few games are regarded as some of the better entries in the series because they got the creep factor right, and Silent Hill 3 stands as one of the best among them for aforementioned atmosphere.
Unfortunately for it, we’re way off from Halloween, so we’re not interested in being scared right now. Instead, we’re going to have ourselves a bit of a chuckle with the UFO ending of Silent Hill 3.
The outfit Heather wears, and the “weapon” she uses, completely ruin any chance this run has of being creepy or disturbing, turning it into more of a space alien/zombie-zapping sci-fi adventure. The UFO ending is a recurring optional ending in many Silent Hill games, and most require a second playthrough on a New Game Plus to see.
In SH3, Heather needs to kill 30 enemies with the Heather/Sexy Beam (Dragon Quest reference?) before entering Harry’s apartment. Upon doing so, she finds [spoiler deleted by aliens]. She relates the events of the game up to that point, which prompts [spoiler deleted by aliens] to [spoiler deleted by aliens] the entire town. This ending is a continuation from the events of the UFO endings of the first two games.
See? Scary mood ruined but good. Speaking of killing the experience, have you seen this OREO run of Ori and the Blind Forest? It stands for Ori Reverse Event Order, and man does it break the living snot out of the game. Which reminds me, if you care about the story, play or watch the full game before checking out the run.
