Donkey Kong Country 64, GoldenEye 007, Killer Instinct, and Battletoads. What do these games have in common? Most people’s first answer would be that they were all developed by Rare. And not just that, but Rare in it’s prime. The golden era. What they also have in common is Chameleon Games’ upcoming third-person action-adventure Tamarin. The developer has gathered a group of talented former members of Rare to create this new title. But we have talked about this before. The big news today is that you can now pre-order Tamarin on either PlayStation 4 or Steam.
So what do you get by pre-ordering? Well for starters a 10% discount. Bringing the price down to $26.99 for the base game. Or $35.99 for the deluxe edition. In addition, you’d get a chance to hear a piece from Tamarin’s soundtrack ahead of its release. This is actually pretty cool. The soundtrack is being created by the legendary David Wise. It could very well end up being the best thing about the game. We’re talking about the man behind the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack. He’s responsible for the music from Ironsword, Battletoads, and Captain Skyhawk. To clarify, he doesn’t make bad music.
Enough about the music, what about the game? Well, it stars the titular Tamarin. An adorable little monkey that is out to save the land from an invasion of insects. The gameplay seems to be 3D platforming and exploration. With combat being like a 3rd person shooter. The world looks absolutely charming. I can’t help but think of Yooka-Laylee while I am reading about this game. And I am really hoping it gets a better reception than that did. That said, I actually enjoyed Yooka-Laylee, and I already suspect I am going to have a good time with Tamarin as well. On the other hand, the worst case scenario is we get a bad game with a great new soundtrack.
