The Twilight star, who once dated the Emilia Perez actress, recently took to his Instagram Story to defend his ex amid body-shaming comments. The drama comes just days after Gomez’s appearance at the 2025 SAG Awards sparked discourse online.

“It’s a cruel world full of hate out there. You can never please everyone nor should you have to,” Taylor Lautner wrote. “In my experience it doesn’t make the words sting less, it just refocuses you onto what matters. And it sure isn’t the shape, color or appearance of your body.”
With this in mind, the actor told fans to never forget how “beautiful” they are “inside and out.” He ended his message by asking everyone to “be a little bit nicer” to those around them.
Going Viral at the SAG Awards
Taylor Lautner was inspired to share his input after seeing a viral post from body positivity influencer Alex Light on Instagram. Earlier this week, the content creator posted side-by-side photos of Selena Gomez from the 2024 and 2025 SAG Awards alongside a few contradicting comments surrounding the pop star’s body.
Remarks from last year included people calling Gomez “big big” and no longer “hot.” One comment even advised the “Calm Down” singer to try Ozempic, which is a medication used for weight management. The drug is typically used to treat diabetes. However, celebrities like Amy Schumer and Rebel Wilson have admitted to taking it for weight loss.
As for comments made this year, fans again criticized Gomez’s weight. However, this time, they found an issue with her appearing thinner. For example, one person called Gomez “pathetic” for possibly using Ozempic. Meanwhile, others claimed the actress should have kept her “curves” since she “looked better thicc.”
Gomez has previously explained that her weight fluctuates due to her health issues. After being diagnosed with lupus, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant in September 2017. Since then, the Only Murders in the Building star has continued to treat her lupus condition by taking medication. Side effects of the medicine include weight fluctuation. She once told Raquelle Stevens that comments about her weight “messed” her up. However, she’s since learned to ignore the hate.
The Actors Have History Together
Taylor Lautner’s defense of Selena Gomez comes years after the two dated. Following her breakup with fellow Disney star Nick Jonas, Gomez had a brief romance with Lautner in 2009. They met through his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart. While they appeared to have great chemistry, the pair ultimately didn’t work out due to the pressures of fame, according to People.
Both have since moved on with other people. After going public with his girlfriend Taylor Dome in 2018, the Twilight alum married the California nurse in 2022. Meanwhile, Gomez confirmed she was dating record producer Benny Blanco in December 2023. A year later, Gomez announced that she and Blanco had gotten engaged.
Although Taylor Lautner and Selena Gomez are no longer in each other’s lives, they appear to still be on good terms. Lautner and his wife even sometimes hang out with Gomez’s best friend, Taylor Swift.
