Taylor Swift’s husband, Travis Kelce, is currently being mocked online after details from a Missouri case revealed that he was scammed by an illegal immigrant.
According to the New York Post, Kelce was named as a victim in a major Ponzi scheme by prosecutors in a Missouri court. He was reportedly one of Siddharth Jawahar’s victims. The U.S. Attorney’s Office identified Jawahar as an illegal immigrant.
It was reported that Jawahar was sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud that cost investors more than $35 million. A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri stated that Jawahar pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud. He was also ordered to pay more than $31 million in restitution to his victims. As of now, the amount Kelce lost in the scheme has not been made public.
The publication also reported that Jawahar used a significant amount of the money for himself. “He used the money to purchase private jets, stays at luxury hotels, outings at fancy restaurants, memberships at private clubs and upscale apartments in Austin and New York,” the publication wrote.
Kelce is currently being mocked by some critics because of his marriage to Taylor Swift and her past association with causes that included support for immigrants and refugees. Swift publicly supported the 2017 Women’s March, which focused on several issues, including immigrant and refugee rights, although she did not specifically state in her message that she was defending immigrants. Some people referencing Swift’s political history have used Kelce’s position as a victim of the scheme to make jokes about him being defrauded by an undocumented immigrant.
