Tennessee Love Story for the Ages as Dolly Parton Follows Her Beloved Carl and It All Began at a Laundromat: ‘I’m Gonna Marry That Girl’

Still going.

The most famous woman in country music spent 60 years married to the most private man in it, and she spent her final year and a half carrying the weight of losing him.

Dolly Parton’s death at 80 came a year and a half after she lost Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades, a loss she carried openly: by her own account, the Tennessee icon let her health slide while caring for him. Theirs was the most enduring and least seen love story in entertainment history, and it began on her very first day in town.

She arrived in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1964 as an 18-year-old with a suitcase of ambition and stopped at the Wishy Washy Laundromat. “I’d come to Nashville with dirty clothes,” she recalled, insisting she was at that laundromat “looking for anything but love.” A 21-year-old local hollered at her; being from the country, she waved. Years later she explained what made him different: “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me). He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.“

Carl needed no such deliberation. “My first thought was I’m gonna marry that girl,” he said in one of the only public statements of his life. “My second thought was, Lord she’s good lookin’. And that was the day my life began. I wouldn’t trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth.“

He was right on the first thought. On May 30, 1966, they slipped off to Ringgold, Georgia, and married before three witnesses: her mother, the preacher, and the preacher’s wife, keeping it quiet because her record label feared marriage would hurt the rising star. The rings came from Sears, on credit, and she never upgraded her small diamond. The morning after the wedding, she got up early for a radio appearance. “He understood that I had to do what I had come to Nashville to do,” she said. “He never tried to make me give it up.“

For 60 years he ran his Tennessee paving business and stayed so far from her spotlight that she periodically had to debunk rumors he did not exist; by her own telling he saw her perform live just once, and a bank teller who flirted with him famously inspired “Jolene.” They renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary. When he died in March 2025 at 82, she said: “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.” She outlived him by a year and a half, saying in her own words that she had let her health go while nursing him, and she followed him on August 25, 2026.

It’s Still Going

Asked how it lasted, she gave the answer that reads like prophecy: “I like it when people say, ‘How did it last so long?’ I say, ‘It’s still going.’“

It still is. Somewhere, a laundromat door opens.
