While the distinct smell of bacon and cigarettes should seem obvious, it unfortunately was not to a resident of an apartment in Texas. They were so bothered that they allegedly reported the smell to management, resulting in the property manager getting involved. The bacon-cooking culprit, a neighbor who goes by Grab3tto on Reddit, had burned some bacon and cracked open his patio door to air out his home. Within an hour, he had received a warning.
In his post on r/mildlyinfuriating, Grab3tto shared a screenshot of the apartment management’s warning over his burnt bacon smell. It accused him of smoking multiple times on his patio, which was unbelievable to him, considering he claimed to have quit smoking over half a dozen years ago. He also questioned how his neighbors could have gotten such a strong whiff of his burnt bacon in the first place.
“I even live on the third floor on a corner so it would have barely infiltrated anyone else’s apartment,” Grab3tto explained, adding how opening his patio door was necessary for ventilation. On top of that, he says he’s lived in the apartment for 3 years and hasn’t smoked once, so this accusation and warning of “multiple reports of smoking” was very suspicious. “When I called, they said the email was ‘just a courtesy,’” he wrote after calling the landlord.
Reddit Accuses the Landlord of Subtly ‘Documenting’ the Texas Tenant for Violating Apartment Policy
Among the tens of thousands of Redditors who tuned into Grab3tto’s post, a huge handful warned him about this so-called “courtesy,” the apartment owner spoke of. “It’s not a courtesy, it’s ‘documentation’…. Even though you called, you should reply to the email and state the same. If it happens again? No one will remember that you called,” warned a top-upvoted commenter. “Always have a paper trail!” another exclaimed in agreement.
For clarification, Grab3tto also added that he doesn’t believe he’s allowed any sort of grill on his patio in his “apartment complex of constantly rotating neighbors.” However, he has admitted to opening his patio door several times while cooking due to the kitchen area’s poor ventilation system. Several people blamed this sort of apartment management strictness on American culture.
“lol USA is a joke,” laughed one user. “It feels very against the whole American freedom idea that seems to be a big thing for US folk,” agreed a Redditor from the UK. “I just find it crazy that people can dictate what you can do in your patio outside! Doesn’t sound like a very free country!” a third person exclaimed.
American culture criticisms aside, either someone can’t distinguish between burnt bacon and cigarette smoke, or, as commenters pointed out, Grab3tto really charred his bacon.
