A Florida mother has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a video of herself disciplining her toddler daughter with a slipper during a swimming lesson. According to the mother, the girl had refused to listen to her swimming instructor, Nathan. While some viewers defended her parenting methods, others were horrified by how she handled the situation, with one describing her actions as “so heartless.”
The mother, Shay, said she decided to step in after watching her daughter, Legacy, refuse to follow instructions. In the clip, Legacy was sitting in the shallow end of a swimming pool, pulling on a pool noodle that her instructor was also holding.
Wanting to correct that behavior, Shay took off her black slipper, approached the pool, and began hitting her daughter with it. She then ordered Legacy to get out of the water and stand in a corner. The girl immediately obeyed.
Shay scolded the child for not listening and told her that, as a consequence, she wouldn’t be getting any screen time on her phone or ice cream. Legacy apologized, but her mother struck her a few more times before ordering her back into the pool to continue the lesson.
The video then cut to another moment when the mother and daughter were walking together. Legacy seemed upset about losing her treats and pleaded with her mother to reconsider the punishment, but Shay wasn’t changing her mind.
Shay reminded the little girl that she had refused to listen to her instructor and now had to deal with the consequences. When Legacy continued crying softly, Shay slipped her foot out of her slipper and threatened to use it again.
The little girl immediately backed away, repeating, “No, no, no.” The mom did not use it this time, and the two continued walking.

The video has attracted more than 5 million views on TikTok. In the comments, viewers were divided over the mother’s actions.
Several people were disturbed that the mother had used a slipper to discipline her daughter, arguing that the child was too young. “Stop hitting that child with shoes not nice of you to do that,” one person commented. Another asked, “Why is it normalized to hit your kids?? this is so wrong” A third said, “You’re so hard on her, that’s so heartless.” A fourth added, “Seeing this is truly awful; children should not be hit, regardless of what they do.”
At the same time, others praised the mother for refusing to overlook her daughter’s behavior, especially during an activity where following instructions could be important for safety.

The controversy didn’t appear to change the mother’s position. After the video gained attention, Shay posted another TikTok explaining why she believed disciplining her daughter was necessary.
“I know sometimes disciplining our children hurts us more than it hurts them,” Shay said. “We don’t want to see them cry, we don’t want to disappoint them, and we certainly don’t want them to feel like we’re being mean. But parents we must understand that discipline is not the absence of love, discipline is an expression of love.”
The mother explained that she believed discipline was necessary to teach children right from wrong, set boundaries, and help them understand that their actions have consequences. She added that if parents failed to teach their children these lessons, life eventually would, and it might not be as gentle with them.
