2023 Eisner Awards
This year’s Eisner Awards reflect the 150 print and online comics and graphic novels published from January 1 to December 31, 2022. In 32 categories, Image, and DC nabbed the greatest number of nominations. However, Image clearly takes the cake with 20 individual and 6 shared against DC’s 11 individual and 5 shared nominations. Of the titles that Image produced last year, standouts for the Eisner Awards include Clementine, The Department of Truth, It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth, Killadelphia, Love Everlasting, Monstress, and Rain. For DC, its standouts include Human Target and Nightwing.
Meanwhile, the publisher Fantagraphics earned 13 nominations this year. Its big hitter of the year was Thomas Woodruff’s Francis Rothbart! The Tale of a Fastidious Feral. Over at Marvel Comics, the publisher received nine nominations this year. Also nabbing nine is Dark Horse, where Jeff Lemire’s Mazebook Dark Horse Direct Edition really shone.
Nom, Nom, Noms
This year’s Eisner Awards nominated creators showing off some of the brightest in the biz. Leading the creator nominations is Zoe Thorogood, with five nominations (three for Rain and two for It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth). Following close behind is Thomas Woodruff and his four-time nominated Francis Rothbart!. Also trailing Thorogood with four nominations is Tom King, who is recognized for his work on Batman: One Bad Day: The Riddler, Love Everlasting, and The Human Target. This year, six creators each received three nominations. They include Sean Phillips, Bruno Redondo, Mark Russell, Sana Takeda, James Tynion IV, and Chip Zdarsky.
On a more touching note, the late Kevin Conroy nabbed a posthumous nomination for his “Finding Batman” story included in the 2022 DC Pride issue. To check out the complete list of nominees, visit the official Eisner Awards page on the Comic-Con website.
