If the sitcom stylings of WandaVision aren’t doing it for you Marvel-wise, then Disney Plus’s upcoming action series Falcon and the Winter Soldier just might. In fact, a brand new trailer landed today at the Superbowl LV, giving us yet another glimpse at the miniseries which stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan in the titular leading roles.
Check it out in all its high-octane glory below:
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, consisting of six episodes, is set to debut on Disney Plus next month. It follows the exploits of its titular heroes following the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Falcon, despite having the mantle of Captain America passed onto him by Steve Rogers, refuses to embrace it. Anthony Mackie describes his character’s arc as “walk[ing] the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back.”
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier promises to be more grounded than previous Marvel productions. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige describes the series as “more of a reflection of the real world” and considers it “more relevant and more poignant” now considering the miniseries was written in 2019. The show tackles “weighty” themes, according to series composer Henry Jackman including “how African Americans would feel about being Captain America or not.”
In terms of tone, fans can expect similarities to 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter described said film as “hard-driving old-school action, surprising character development and intriguing suspense” that dropped the CGI grandeur of its predecessors. And if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s trailer is anything to go by, it is going to emulate this to a large degree.
You can watch the show on March 19, 2021 on Disney Plus.
