If you’ve always wanted to be on TV and partake in some over-the-top destruction while you’re at it, your time has arrived: The Finals has launched at last. The self-described “free-to-play combat game show” has been at the top of many players’ Most Wanted lists since the first trailer was released. It’s easy to see why. Fully destructible environments aren’t something that arena shooters see much of. Combining the risk-reward loop of extraction shooters with the blistering action of traditional FPS like Call of Duty is a recipe for success. Now that The Finals has finally been released, it’s time to get messy.
The Finals Release Is Finally Here
It’s not often that the main draw for a new FPS is the map design, but that’s the case with The Finals. The cinematic maps featuring dynamic time-of-day and weather systems look fantastic. What’s better than that? How destructible these environments are. The Finals runs on Unreal Engine 5, and from everything we’ve seen it makes the absolute most of that tech. Explosions rip realistically through buildings, sending them crumbling down on top of players. How that destructibility will shape gameplay remains to be seen. Still, the game looks ready to stand out from all of its competitors thanks to this mechanic.
When wrecking balls and arson are equally viable strategies, you know a game is on to something. The PvP shooter market often struggles to find compelling new gimmicks, instead falling into tired formulas. The Finals stands a real shot at breaking free of that. Different skills, weapons, and gadgets aim to keep things fresh, and it seems there will be plenty of ways to combine them with the game’s trademark environmental destruction. Of course, being a superstar would be dull if you didn’t look the part. Thankfully, the game promises plenty of character customization options too. Invite some friends. It’s time to burn it all down.
The Finals is available for PC, PlayStation 5, and
