Colin Farrell is making his way back to Gotham as The Penguin as the Batman villain has a trailer for his spinoff series set in Matt Reeves’ Batverse (seen below). The footage was released as a part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation that merged HBO Max and Discover+, resulting in a new brand, Max. The series is now in production.
The Penguin trailer is not something to hold people over, as the series will release in 2024, but at least we get a taste of what to expect from the spinoff series. As the city is in chaos after the events of the film starring Robert Pattinson as the Bat and Paul Dano as The Riddler, Oswald Cobblepot is left in the ruins of the flooded city and has an opening for some power moves in the criminal underworld.

Reeves is starting to slowly build out his universe, which will be outside of James Gunn’s DCU. The upcoming spinoff series is one of the few projects known to be in development as The Batman 2 and an Arkham Asylum-based series. This will run alongside the rebooted DCU as Gunn lets other projects being in Elseworlds, a multiverse explanation to let other stories thrive without ties to his universe.
The Penguin trailer gives some glimpses at a few of the characters we will meet, along with some we don’t see quite yet. It will star Cristin Milioti (Made for Love) as Carmine’s daughter Sofia Falcone, Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Carmine’s son Alberto Falcone, and Clancy Brown (SpongeBob Squarepants) as gangster Salvatore Maroni. It will also star Rhenzy Feliz (Runaways), Michael Kelly (House of Cards), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse), Diedre O’Connell (Outer Range), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), François Chau (American Gigolo), and David H. Holmes (High Fidelity).
Matt Reeves is executive producing with showrunner Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). It will also be executive produced by Craig Zobel, Farrell, Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, and Bill Carraro. Zobel (Mare of Easttown) will direct the first three episodes.
While we have a trailer for The Penguin, no release date has been set except for it being planned to release on Max in 2024.
