In an already astonishingly good gaming year, 2023 is far from done when it comes to amazing and anticipated games. While September was great, October might end up being even better. We’ve got games from multiple genres, long-awaited sequels, and the return of iconic videogame characters. It’s going to be a lot of fun this spooky season, so here are the top 10 most anticipated games coming in October 2023.
10. Hellboy Web of Wyrd
Hellboy hasn’t had the best luck with its video games to this point, but Hellboy Web of Wyrd has a unique look and concept that might give this great franchise its best game yet. The concept is a rogue-like set within the Hellboy universe. The gameplay looks to be a mix of close and long-range combat, emphasizing the character’s signature brutality in the process. It’s got some big-time competition to stand out amongst the crowd in October, but it does something different and might be a surprise hit when Hellboy Web of Wyrd releases on October 18.
9. Forza Motorsport
Forza Motorsport is a long-running series, and its next release has promised to be one of the most realistic depictions of racing ever. Whether that statement will be backed up remains to be seen, but this is a series dedicated to realism, so it wouldn’t be shocking. Each car feels different, complete with different handling and benefits for each. The series’ signature graphics are back in stunning fashion to deliver an experience tough to distinguish from real-life footage, and developers Turn 10 have guaranteed 60 FPS to ensure fun and smooth racing. Multiplayer, multiple mods, and the ability to rewind if you screw up are all here too, so we should get a great package on October 10th.
8. Ghostrunner 2
It’s a bit of a surprise due to how recently we were treated to the first game, but Ghostrunner 2 is already releasing on October 26th. It’s a bold move for sure, but due to how much of a delight the first game was, it’s sure to follow up that success with an impressive sequel. The action was simple, and Ghostrunner 2 looks to amplify it a bit, giving us a more beefed-up arsenal to take down enemies this time around. The final week of the month is a packed one, and Ghostrunner 2 drops on October 26th.
7. Super Mario Bros Wonder
Mario is going back to its roots this October with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. We’re going back to the 2D world for this entry, and it looks better than any 2D game in recent memory. There are multiple characters to choose from, amazing powers to acquire along the way, and some old-school, challenging goodness that we more than welcome back into the gaming community. The graphics are bursting with color and personality, and the creativity on display between the level design and the scenarios you’ll find should satisfy fans both old and new. Everyone loves Mario, and that love will continue when the game releases on October 20th.
6. Total War: Pharoah
Total War is a long-running series that seems to get better and better with each entry. While they have ventured outside of the realm of reality at times, Total War: Pharoah returns them to historical fiction. This entry promises some of the most accurate warfare the series has ever seen, as well as brand-new weather effects to boot. It is looking to expand the economy system and resource management to make a more realistic war sim than players might be used to. You will be warring with several other would-be Pharaohs who will grow in power alongside you, and special events will pop up throughout the campaign, such as endgame invasions that can flip the scenario on its head. With multiplayer attached and a wealth of fans to support it, Total War: Pharoah should be an awesome time when it’s released on October 11th.
5. Sonic Superstars
Just like Super Mario Bros Wonder, Sonic Superstars is set to deliver us a classic 2D sonic game. Everyone expects greatness from Mario, but Sonic has had a rougher run lately, and Sonic Superstars could be the way back into gamers’ hearts. You will have the ability to play as Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy Rose. It has co-op, too, with the entire game playable by you and a friend. Sonic Superstars isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel and has a high chance of success when the game releases on October 17th.
4. Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Following the trend of returning to its roots with this list, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is going back to where it started. With a setting of the Middle East, the smaller map, and the emphasis on stealth back in the series, it’s clear that their open-world, Witcher 3-esque experiences are done with. Assassin’s Creed Mirage stars Basim, the antagonist from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Combat looks better, stealth looks better, and mission variety looks better, so we’ll be expecting a return to form when this game releases on October 12th, 2023.
3. Lords of the Fallen
Lords of the Fallen is the sleeping giant of October. We already have seen two quality soul-like’s in Lies of P and Remnant 2 this year, but the original Souls-like has returned to take its place among the greats. At a glance, this looks like “Dark Souls 4,” and I don’t think that’s a negative at all. You will need to traverse the realm of the dead called the Umbral Realm, and here is where the originality of the game comes through. You will fight different enemies, see different architecture, and get different equipment when the Umbral Realm is active, and it’s one of the more intriguing gaming features we’ve seen in some time. We’ll see if it lives up to the hype when the game releases on October 13th, 2023.
2. Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake has been dormant for a decade. It’s one of those games that you thought would just never get a sequel. Thanks to the success of Control, Remedy Entertainment has resurrected a beloved character. Alan Wake 2 is a direct sequel to the first game, as well as Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. It looks to take all the Twin Peaks-esque energy from the first game and launch it into next-gen. It’s a dual-protagonist adventure, switching between Alan Wake and Saga Anderson, and the result looks like it will be a thrilling mystery and the perfect, creepy adventure to play right before Halloween when the game releases on October 27th.
1. Spider Man 2
Possibly the most anticipated game of the entire year, Spider-Man 2 is upon us. Taking place directly after Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the game stars both Peter Parker and Miles Morales and will feature both of them in unique ways. The story this time around appears to be darker, with Peter dealing with the effects of the Symbiote, and villains from Venom to Kraven the Hunter will be appearing as well. The graphics look better than ever, and the dual-protagonist system is a novel one, as both Spidermen will be persistent in the city at the same time. You can team up with each other at any time, too, which should make for some awesome team-up scenarios. It’s likely not going to change the gameplay in massive ways, but it doesn’t need to. The first game was incredible, and Spider-Man 2 will surely follow up in a big way when it releases on October 20th, 2023.
