Hire unit, smash foe, profit. It’s a simple loop reminiscent of Supercell‘s other cartoon battler, and Squad Busters hides much of the same strategic depth as Clash of Clans. Between units, spells, coin economy, Fusions, and Mega units, there’s a lot to think about. Nothing’s stopping you from fielding a squad of nothing but Chickens and Goblins, but you’ll get further with a more strategic approach. If everything goes sideways in the final seconds of the match, you’ll want something better than a Baby Barbarian to bail you out. Here are our top five tips to climb fast in Squad Busters.
Use Battle Mods to Your Advantage
Every multiplayer match includes a Battle Mod that introduces a game-changing condition of some kind. The more worlds you unlock, the wider the Mod selection. One of the best tips to climb fast in Squad Busters is to tailor your strategy to the current Battle Mod. Turbo Overload in action? That means everyone’s faster, so Hog Rider is less essential. Tree Giants? Consider giving Greg’s wood-chopping axe a chance. Adapt to the active Battle Mod and you stand a much better chance of standing atop that podium.
Start With the Right Squad
After unlocking new units, you’ll face a new problem: deciding who to field first. Unit selection matters throughout the battle, but your first few units are arguably the most important. Survey your surroundings as soon as the match starts. How soon can you get Hog Rider into some Grass for a speed boost? Is there a tree you can harvest with Greg to open a chest right away? You’re vulnerable until you have a few units, so pick units that will get your early economy going, either by clearing weak mobs or harvesting resources.
Let Poor Targets Go
It can be tempting to attack your opponents at every opportunity, but that’s rarely your best option. One of the best tips any Squad Busters player can get is to avoid battle until you’re sure you can win. If you lose units to careless engagements early on, holding the line in the final seconds will be much tougher.
So who is a good target? Weak, distracted, and stunned opponents are the best, as you can often gank and pick them off without much trouble. Avoid head-on fights unless your squad composition is clearly stronger, and don’t let a fleeing opponent drag you into troublesome areas. You’ll have time to deal with them later.
Launch Decisive Strikes
Shop codes won’t bail you out of a bad fight, so when you commit to battle, you’ll need to make it count. The first step to a successful decisive strike is to build a diverse squad. You’ll want tanks and DPS units backed by Medic and other supports. Here are some other things you can do to increase your chances of victory:
- Stockpile Turbos to dominate the battlefield through superior positioning
- Time your spells not only to maximize damage but also to disrupt enemy movements
- Conserve your Mega units when possible
Build Victory Streaks
The fight doesn’t stop at the leaderboard. Placing in the top five multiple times builds your Top-5 Streak, adding a bonus tap to the end-game Chest. Winning therefore allows you to easily snowball by racking up additional rewards which translate to stronger units and more wins. It doesn’t matter if you have one unit or a dozen at the end of the match. As long as you have the most Gems, you win, so secure that emerald plunder however you have to. Better to win with one Chicken than lose with five Heavies.
