Warhammer is a game which has never quite been done justice in its various digital incarnations. There have been some fantastic attempts over the years, with Mark of Chaos  and WAR Online standing out as shining examples. However, despite these , the size of the Warhammer world, its detail and its variety has never quite been reflected.

Total War Warhammer Griffon VS Wyvern
Karl Franz on his Griffon and an Ork on his Wyvern

The video below is the first in-engine trailer released from the upcoming Total War: Warhammer title. Creative Assembly (the developers) state that this is the first of many upcoming trailers, introducing the games main characters and factions. In this one we meet Karl Franz, the leader and Emperor of the Empire, facing off against a horde of Greenskins.

“The Battle of Black Fire Pass is one of Karl Franz’ unique quest battles in Total War: Warhammer, and also formed the basis for this year’s E3 demo,” the developer said. “You’ll be able to watch the battle in its entirety, along with a developer walkthrough in just two weeks’ time on Thursday 30th July.”

What’s really exciting about a Total War: Warhammer game, is that Total War games go big. You’re not managing a country, or a crack squad of whoever, but instead  you manage a huge empire with all the troops, heroes and cities within it. For a world as expansive as Warhammer’s this is really exciting and brimming with potential. Maybe we’ll actually get to manage an Ork WAAAAAAGH! from its angry Warboss beginnings to its furious horde finale. Perhaps we’ll be able to infiltrate the Empire as the insidious forces of Chaos, twisting their might to the terrible will of the Chaos Gods. The potential is there.

Total War: Warhammer Trolls
Look close and you can see Trolls vomiting on troops in the background. In true Warhammer style

For those who’ve grown up with Warhammer, or played previous digital Warhammer games but hungered for something more, our time is coming!
