Vanillaware, the renowned Japanese video game developer behind titles like Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown, but most recently 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, has a new RPG brewing called Unicorn Overlord that looks to be a mix of classic strategy RPG combat with its signature storytelling that makes their games such a joy to play through. It also has Atlus along for the ride, increasing the hype for the game considerably.
What Can We Expect From Unicorn Overlord?
Unicorn Overlord is a captivating fusion of action RPG and side-scrolling platformer genres, wrapped in a beautifully hand-drawn 2D art style that has become the signature of Vanillaware. The sprites are reminiscent of older games like Final Fantasy Tactics or the more recent Triangle Strategy.
The gameplay in Unicorn Overlord seamlessly blends turn-based RPG combat with comic-book-like storytelling. Players will face off against a myriad of fantastical creatures, all gorgeously designed and animated, in intense battles that require skill and strategy. The gameplay looks to be inspired by games like Fire Emblem and Brigandine, with a field map that then shrinks into smaller arenas when battles break out. In a tribute to the JRPGs of old, you’re also going to be able to recruit 60 playable characters, each with unique abilities and stories to explore.
The world of Unicorn Overlord is a visual masterpiece of an RPG if the trailer is any indication. Vanillaware’s attention to detail is evident in every hand-drawn background, character sprite, and special effect. The game’s vibrant color palette and intricate designs create an immersive and enchanting atmosphere that is a feast for the eyes.
In addition to its strategic gameplay and incredible visual style, Unicorn Overlord will feature a soundtrack composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, known for his work on titles like Final Fantasy XII and Vagrant Story. RPGs of old benefitted greatly from their incredible soundtracks, and Unicorn Overlord will look to continue that tradition.
Whether you’re a fan of action RPG platformers or you appreciate breathtaking visuals and storytelling, Unicorn Overlord is one to keep an eye out for. This could be the title that takes Vanillaware into mainstream success, so we’ll be waiting eagerly to get our hands on it.
Unicorn Overlord is due out on March 8th, 2024, for the Nintendo Switch.
