Elliot Page is joining the video game TV show craze with an adaptation of the 2013 title Beyond: Two Souls. His production company, Pageboy Productions, bought the rights to the game he starred in. According to Deadline, Page’s take on the project will play with its non-linear narrative. Page stated, “We want to create a unique vision of the characters and their journeys that resonates with fans and newcomers.”
Elliot Page Brings Beyond: Two Souls to the Small Screen
For the uninitiated, Beyond: Two Souls was a bizarre action-adventure title that starred Elliot Page. The story, which appeared out of order, followed Page’s character as they lived their life with a ghostly presence by their side. It sold very well for the time, but critics and audiences delivered polarized opinions. Page described starring in the game as “one of the most challenging and fulfilling acting experiences of my career.” He also had high praise for the narrative. He stated, “The story’s rich narrative and emotional depth offer us a fantastic foundation.” David Cage, the game’s writer and director at Quantic Dream, voiced his support for Page’s decision to adapt the property. He went so far as to say, “I couldn’t think of anyone else to tell this story with the same passion on another medium.”
Elliot Page’s involvement with this adaptation raised some eyebrows due to difficult elements of the original production. Back in 2015, the Sony email leaks revealed that Page considered legal action against Cage and Quantic Dream. The game included a PG-13 shower sequence, but Page refused to appear nude on screen. For no apparent reason, Quantic Dream developed a nude model of Page. It remained inaccessible to any given player, but some cracked the code and leaked the images online. This lawsuit never manifested, but it created clear bad blood between Cage and Page. That issue must have become water under the bridge, as Cage described this project as another collaboration with the actor.
Beyond: Two Souls sold itself on its celebrity stars, making the transition to TV very natural. Tons of gamers have issues with the story, but it’s possible that Page’s influence might patch over some of the holes. Many fans loved Beyond: Two Souls, but a new take on the material could very well change the game’s legacy. Whether it works out or not, it’s clear that this story meant something to Page.
