Your health in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can get very high, but what is the max Heart count in the game? In The Legend of Zelda series, health is represented by small Heart Container icons on the corner of your screen. You always start with three hearts, yet you can collect Heart Containers that will increase your health by one heart. You gain Heart Containers in Tears of the Kingdom through a variety of means.

The Max Hearts in Tears of the Kingdom Explained

While we’ve seen some claims that 30 Hearts is the maximum health, this is not true. Based on our own experiences, 40 Hearts is the max health you can gain in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It also makes theoretically more sense for you to reach 40 hearts.

There are a total of 152 Shrines scattered across Tears of the Kingdom. Each Shrine rewards you with one Light of Blessing. Dividing 152 blessings with four equals 38, meaning if you only exchange for Heart Containers at a statue, you could theoretically gain 38 Hearts.

Six dungeon bosses reward you with a Heart Container, plus you start with three Hearts, meaning you can potentially have 47 Hearts. But we believe the game won’t let you achieve anything higher than 40.

Hearts & Increasing Health Explained

In The Legend of Zelda series, Link always starts with three hearts, yet you can collect Heart Containers that will increase your health by one heart. You gain Heart Containers by gathering Lights of Blessing and defeating bosses at the end of the dungeons.

Link can exchange Lights of Blessings with a Goddess Statue for a Heart Container. You need four Lights of Blessings to gain a Heart Container. Lights of Blessings are rewards for completing a Shrine, but you only get one for every Shrine you complete, meaning you would need to finish four Shrines.

You can also exchange four Lights of Blessings to increase your Stamina. However, there are only a limited amount of Lights of Blessings. If you run out of Blessings but want to switch between your Stamina and Hearts, you can bargain with the Forbidden Horned Statue to swap or sell one of your Heart Containers with a piece of your Stamina Guage.

How to Recover Health

You regain health in the game by eating meals or sleeping in a bed. Your max heart will not increase even if you eat a dish that gives you more than your maximum health. For example, if you only have four hearts and decide to eat a meal that heals up to five hearts, your health will only recover up to four hearts.

Dungeon Bosses and Goddess Statues are the only way to gain a Heart Container in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. At the end of every dungeon, you face an enemy boss. Defeating the boss will reward you with a Heart Container, increasing your max health by one heart.
